Makar Sankranti, or Uttarayan is a festival day in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya. It is one of the major Indian harvest festival celebrated on 14th of January of every year. It marks the first day of the sun’s transit into the Makara, marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.  Kite or ‘patang’ flying is traditionally observed as a part of this festival. Undhiyu ( spicy mix of winter vegetables) and chikkis ( made from sesame seeds, peanuts and jaggery ) are the special festival recipes savoured on this day.
